About Anchor Bankside

An 18th-century riverside pub on the site of earlier taverns, with a multi-level Thames-facing terrace looking straight across to the City.

The current building dates to the 1770s, but a tavern has stood on this spot by the river since at least the 17th century, on land once owned by the Bishops of Winchester next to their Bankside palace. Local tradition holds that Samuel Pepys watched the Great Fire of London from a pub on this site in 1666, and the maze of low-beamed rooms and creaking staircases still gives a sense of that age even though the building itself is Georgian. What draws the crowds now is the terrace: several stepped levels of outdoor seating running along the river frontage between London Bridge and the Globe, packed on any warm evening with a mix of tourists, City workers and Borough Market stragglers.
