About Cittie of Yorke

A monumental pub with a nave-like back room recalling a guild hall, heir to taverns that have occupied this site since 1430.

Although pubs are documented on this site as far back as 1430, the current building dates from the 1920s and for decades was known as Henneky's Long Bar. Its great back room, with soaring ceilings, a triangular Georgian-style stove and rows of Victorian wooden cubicles, deliberately mimics the look of a medieval guild hall, a stone's throw from the Inns of Court where London's barristers train. In 2014 a page of family papers turned up an impromptu poem the Welsh writer Dylan Thomas composed in the pub in 1951. It's Grade II listed and appears in CAMRA's inventory of historic pub interiors. It has been run for years by the independent Samuel Smith's brewery, which keeps prices notably low for the area.
