About The Coborn
A Victorian pub built in 1848 as the Coborn Arms on a quiet side street between Mile End and Bow, run by Whitbread until the mid-1960s and by Young's Brewery since 1984.
Built in 1848 on a then-new residential street between Mile End and Bow, the Coborn Arms opened as one of a wave of pubs serving the terraced housing spreading east from the City. It passed to the brewer Whitbread in 1965, part of the wider consolidation of independent London pubs into national brewery ownership through the 20th century, before Young's Brewery took it over in 1984 and has run it since, latterly trading simply as the Coborn. The building's original Victorian proportions and corner-pub layout survive behind the Young's livery, and its position on a quiet side street rather than a main road has kept it functioning as a genuine local rather than a passing-trade venue. A garden and regular weekly events, including a long-running pub quiz, anchor it as one of the steadier fixtures for the streets around Coborn Road station.
