About The Commercial

A locally listed pub on Railton Road with licensed history back to 1876, its Neo-Georgian frontage and Art Deco-era interior dating to a 1938 enlargement, once the local of London Welsh RFC.

The Commercial developed alongside Herne Hill station, which opened in 1862, and was first recorded as a licensed pub in 1876; the building seen today owes its Neo-Georgian frontage and much of its interior, including original counters, bar-back and fielded wall panelling, to a 1938 enlargement. It was designated a locally listed heritage asset by Lambeth Council in 2016, and through the 1970s and 80s served as the social home of London Welsh RFC. It stands on Railton Road, historically known as Brixton's 'Frontline' for its role in the area's social and civil rights history, and has picked up CAMRA recognition including a South East London Pub of the Season award.
