About The Herne Tavern

A 1930s pub on the East Dulwich/Forest Hill border with a well-preserved historic interior, a large dog-friendly garden, and family-friendly weekend trade.

The Herne Tavern is a good example of the improved, 'reformed' pub design of the interwar years, built in the 1930s with a spacious, comfortable layout intended to move drinking away from the cramped Victorian gin-palace model. It's changed hands a few times in recent years and is now run by Urban Pubs & Bars, the operator that took on a string of sites — including several former Antic pubs — after Antic's 2024 administration. What keeps people coming back is the garden: large, family- and dog-friendly, and one of the better outdoor spaces on this side of East Dulwich, backing onto the green space near Peckham Rye.
