About The Refectory

A Finchley Road pub dating to 1916, thought to have had one of the first fully electric restaurant kitchens in London.

The Refectory opened in 1916 on Finchley Road and is remembered locally for an unusual claim to fame: its kitchen is thought to have been among the very first in London to run entirely on electricity. It closed for a stretch in the 2000s before reopening in 2007 under new ownership with a full contemporary refit — the upstairs public room went residential, but the ground-floor pub and the old rear night-club annexe both survived the change.
