About The Dog and Duck
Built in 1897 for the Cannon Brewery, this tile-and-mirror Victorian jewel box on Bateman Street has an upstairs dining room dedicated to George Orwell, one of its regulars.
Squeezed into a corner of Soho barely bigger than its own bar, the Dog and Duck is one of the capital's most complete small Victorian pub interiors, with mosaic floors, etched glass and a horseshoe bar dating to its 1897 rebuilding by architect Francis Chambers. George Orwell drank here often enough that the upstairs room now carries his name and photographs, and the pub has also drawn Madonna and passing royals over the years. It sits on CAMRA's National Inventory of historic pub interiors, a rare survivor amid Soho's constant churn.
On tap
A well-tended cask ale line-up alongside Nicholson's usual lagers and ciders.
Food
Classic British pub food — pies, fish and chips, Sunday roasts — served at close quarters.
