About Earl Ferrers
A Victorian pub built to serve workers at a nearby silk mill, named after Laurence Shirley, 4th Earl Ferrers, the last British peer hanged, fully refurbished in 2026.
The Earl Ferrers takes its unusual name from Laurence Shirley, the 4th Earl Ferrers, who in 1760 became the last British peer to be hanged, a grim historical footnote for an otherwise cheerful Streatham corner pub. It was built to serve workers at a nearby silk mill and once ran as three separate bars, and is remembered by some older regulars as having had a recording studio in the basement under a previous owner. A full refurbishment completed in 2026 kept the pub's Victorian bones intact while sharpening the food and drink offer, with Sunday roasts now a weekly draw alongside its everyday trade as a neighbourhood local.
