About Effra Hall Tavern
An independent Afro-Caribbean community pub tucked into the Coldharbour backstreets, saved from closure by a 2016 community campaign and still running live reggae and jazz nights.
The Effra Hall Tavern sits on the quiet backstreets around Kellett Road, a short walk from Brixton's main drag, and has long served as a genuine community anchor for the area's Afro-Caribbean population. It faced closure in 2016 but was saved through a determined local campaign, and has since carried on with live reggae and jazz nights, a strong regulars' culture and an unpretentious, old-school Brixton character that has become increasingly rare as the surrounding streets gentrify. It's the kind of pub that rewards a detour off the main road rather than a passing visit.
