About Famous Royal Oak

A family-run traditional pub on St James's Lane, on a site that has held a pub for over two centuries, positioned beneath the old railway line now walked as the Parkland Walk.

A pub has stood on this St James's Lane site for more than 200 years, making the current Famous Royal Oak one of the older continuously licensed premises in Muswell Hill, even though the building itself has been rebuilt and altered over that time. It sits directly beneath the Parkland Walk, the disused railway line turned nature trail that also passes the Railway Tavern in Crouch End further along its route, giving it a natural trade from walkers and cyclists. The pub is run as a family business rather than through a national chain, and leans hard into home cooking — Sunday roasts prepared by the family's own kitchen team run through the year, with barbecues taking over on summer Sundays.
