About The Prince Alfred
One of London's most complete Victorian pub interiors, its rare snob screens once used to separate drinkers by class, later immortalised in a David Bowie video.
Built in 1856, the Prince Alfred is one of the best-preserved Victorian pubs in London, upgraded to Grade II* listed status in 2022 specifically for its lavish interior, most notably its surviving 'snob screens' — small partitions that once let wealthier drinkers order without being seen by, or having to see, the working-class clientele in an adjoining bar. It appears on CAMRA's National Inventory of historic pub interiors as a result. Its ornate frontage and interior also caught the eye of David Bowie, who filmed part of his Grammy-winning 1984 short film for 'Blue Jean' here.
On tap
A well-kept selection of cask ales, served across the pub's subdivided historic bar.
Food
