About The Red Lion

A Grade II-listed rebuild of a fifteenth-century coaching inn on Chipping Barnet’s High Street, now run as a Toby Carvery.

The Red Lion traces back to the 1400s, when it was one of several inns that kept Chipping Barnet fed, watered and stabled as the last stop before the Great North Road climbed out of London — by 1817 some 150 coaches a day were said to pass through. The current building dates from 1930, a rebuild commissioned by the Meux Brewery, and the pub spent a wilder patch in the 1980s and 90s trading as the "Dandy Lion" and later "The Felix and Firkin" before its old name returned. It now operates as a Toby Carvery, but the Grade II listing keeps the building itself intact.

On tap

A standard carvery-pub lager and ale range, plus the usual soft drinks and wine list.

Food

All-day roast carvery — the main reason regulars still make the trip.
