About The Rising Sun
A traditional Samuel Smith's pub in the lanes beside St Bartholomew's Hospital, serving Old Brewery Bitter from oak casks in the cellar.
Set on Cloth Fair, one of the old lanes around Smithfield and a short walk from St Bartholomew's Hospital, The Rising Sun is a Samuel Smith's house and, like the brewery's other London pubs, sticks to its own beers. Local lore, repeated by CAMRA, has it that grave-diggers once met in the upper room to talk over selling bodies to the doctors at Barts. The building later served as offices for a few years before Samuel Smith bought it; it had previously been a Courage pub. Today it has a garden, a dartboard, which is unusual in this part of the City, and a venue-hire offer for parties and private events. Dogs and families are welcome, and the only toilets are upstairs.
On tap
Samuel Smith's Old Brewery Bitter on cask, served from oak casks in the cellar, alongside the brewery's other draught beers, house wines and spirits.
