About Starting Gate

A Grade II-listed pub built in 1875 opposite Alexandra Palace station, named for the starting point of the former Alexandra Park Racecourse — nicknamed 'The Frying Pan' — and now run by Mitchells & Butlers' Castle Pubs brand.

Built in 1875 and now Grade II listed, the Starting Gate takes its name directly from the old Alexandra Park Racecourse, whose distinctive circuit shape earned it the nickname 'The Frying Pan' and whose starting point stood close to this spot before the course closed in 1970. The building retains a traditional stained-wood interior with Victorian period features alongside more contemporary additions from Castle Pubs' refurbishment. It sits directly opposite Alexandra Palace mainline station, with clear sightlines up to the Palace and Park, making it an obvious first or last stop for visitors heading to gigs, the ice rink or the boot fair at Ally Pally. A courtyard beer garden gives it outdoor space that is otherwise scarce on this stretch of Wood Green.
