About The Angel
A Grade II-listed riverside pub tied to Yorkshire brewer Samuel Smith, with a rear balcony directly over the Thames and a longstanding local legend about Judge Jeffreys.
A pub has stood on this riverside site since at least the 15th century, rebuilt in its current form in the 1830s, and the Angel is tied to Samuel Smith's Old Brewery, which supplies its own beer exclusively and keeps prices notably low compared with the surrounding area. Local legend holds that the notorious 'Hanging Judge' George Jeffreys watched executions on the river from the pub's balcony in the 1680s, a story with no solid evidence behind it but one that's told to every visitor regardless. The real draw is that balcony itself, extending directly over the water with wide views up and down the Thames, best appreciated at low tide when the foreshore below is exposed.

Samuel Smith's own beers only — cask ale, lager and cider
