About The Mayflower
A riverside pub near the mooring from which the Mayflower is believed to have departed in 1620, with a wooden jetty extending out over the Thames.
Standing by the stretch of river where the Mayflower is thought to have moored before its 1620 voyage to America — the ship's captain, Christopher Jones, lived locally and is buried in the churchyard of nearby St Mary's — this pub has traded under various names on the site since the 17th century, taking its current name in 1957. Its wooden jetty juts out over the Thames, giving one of the best low-tide river views of any Rotherhithe pub, and it's run today by the small Black Dog Pub Company, which also operates the Prince of Wales in Kennington. It has long claimed to be the only pub in England licensed to sell US postage stamps, a quirk maintained for visiting American tourists tracing the Mayflower story.
