About George IV

A nationally listed Victorian corner pub on Liverpool Road, reopened in 2026 under its original name after decades as The Angelic — restored interior, carpeted floors and a traditional, family-run feel.

Built in 1817 on the corner of Liverpool Road, this imposing pub traded for years as The Angelic, a name that honoured film-maker Derek Jarman, who lived across the street and shot part of The Angelic Conversation (1985) nearby. A 2026 refit restored its original name, George IV, along with much of its nationally listed interior: a ceramic frieze, a six-bay columned bar-back and a mosaic-floor corner entrance. Now family-run, it leans into a traditional feel — carpeted floors, sport on the screens, dog-friendly — deliberately pitched against the area's newer gastropub crowd.

On tap

A classic pub selection of ales, lagers and spirits, favouring the traditional over a craft-heavy list.

Food

Sunday roasts are the standout, alongside a straightforward pub food menu.
