About The Culpeper

A pub, restaurant and small hotel on Commercial Street named after the 17th-century herbalist Nicholas Culpeper, topped by a rooftop garden and greenhouse growing produce for the kitchen.

The Culpeper takes its name from Nicholas Culpeper, the 17th-century herbalist and physician who kept a physic garden in this part of Spitalfields, and the pub leans into that history with a working rooftop garden and greenhouse where much of the produce used downstairs is grown. Spread across several floors of a Commercial Street building, it combines a ground-floor pub with cask ale and cocktails, an upstairs dining room, and a handful of boutique guest rooms, making it one of the few Tower Hamlets pubs doubling as a small hotel. The rooftop space has become a particular draw in warmer months, giving Commercial Street a rare patch of greenery above the traffic, and the kitchen's herb-forward menu ties directly back to the building's Culpeper theme rather than being a generic gastropub add-on. It sits a short walk from both Spitalfields Market and Brick Lane, pulling a mixed crowd of market visitors, office workers and overnight guests.
