About The Surprise

A Chelsea free house established in 1853 and named after HMS Surprise, a captured French corvette, with a well-curated wine and whisky list.

The Surprise takes its name from HMS Surprise, a French corvette captured by the Royal Navy and later immortalised in fiction, a nod that fits neatly with Chelsea's long naval and maritime associations nearby at the Royal Hospital. Established in 1853 on a quiet residential terrace, its red pinstripe awnings and interior redesign — featuring upcycled fabrics and a stock of board games — give it a relaxed, unstuffy feel, backed by a genuinely serious drinks list built with Hallgarten Fine Wines and a twenty-strong whisky collection.

On tap

Twenty wines by the glass via Hallgarten Fine Wines, a house Surprise Ale, and a twenty-bottle whisky collection.

Food

Seasonal British cooking: Wiltshire beef burgers, North Sea turbot and Somerset lamb.
