About The George & Dragon
Grade II listed, with the original mosaic floor of St George and the dragon still intact; a neighbourhood pub downstairs, the Island restaurant upstairs.
Reopened in September 2026 by Barworks after years shut as The Peasant, this red-brick corner building dates to 1889-90. It keeps the original curved bar, the mosaic floor and a Victorian tiled panel depicting St George and the dragon. The ground floor stays true to its pub roots; upstairs, Island — run by chefs Tom Brown and Brad Carter, both previously Michelin-starred elsewhere — serves day-boat seafood alongside rare-breed meats.
On tap
A curated drinks list put together by Barworks; no traditional cask ale on at present.
Food
Elevated pub classics downstairs; upstairs, Island's surf-and-turf menu.
