About Spouter's Corner

A large Wetherspoon pub at the junction of Wood Green High Road and Lordship Lane, named after 'Spouter's Corner' — a spot used for political rallies and impromptu oratory from the 1860s until the 1970s.

The pub takes its name from the patch of pavement it stands on, historically known as Spouter's Corner, which was used for public rallies and impromptu political speeches from an 1867 Reform League meeting for universal male suffrage right through to Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament rallies and anti-fascist meetings in the mid-20th century. Before the establishment of formal Labour Exchanges in 1910, the same corner also served as an informal hiring point where casual labourers gathered to find work. Wetherspoon's interior nods to this past with large-scale murals, wall art and storyboards covering local history and notable Wood Green residents. When Haringey Council redeveloped the area in the early 1980s it formally designated a new free-speech area outside Wood Green Library, in direct continuation of the tradition this pub is named after.
