About The Star Tavern
A quiet Belgravia mews local with an unlikely past as the meeting place for the gang behind the 1963 Great Train Robbery.
Behind its genteel Belgravia mews setting, the Star Tavern has a properly disreputable history: in the early 1960s, landlord Paddy Kennedy allowed gang leader Bruce Reynolds and his associates to meet here, never more than four at a time, to plan what became the Great Train Robbery of 1963 — a heist that netted around £2.6 million, equivalent to roughly £40 million today. The pub's mixed clientele of criminals, actors and socialites, including Diana Dors, Peter O'Toole and Albert Finney, gave it a glamorous edge that has long outlasted its underworld connections.
On tap
Fuller's cask ales, served in a room with rather more history than its calm exterior suggests.
