About The Grenadier

Built in 1720 as an officers' mess and reached only via a cobbled, unmarked mews, the Grenadier is famous for its ghost story and its Bloody Marys.

Down an easy-to-miss cobbled mews behind Belgrave Square, the Grenadier began life in 1720 as the officers' mess of the First Royal Regiment of Foot Guards, and the red sentry box outside still nods to that military past. Its ghost story is one of London's best-loved: a young officer, caught cheating at cards, is said to have been flogged to death in the cellar, and his spirit is still blamed for unexplained noises each September. The ceiling above the bar is covered in banknotes, stuck up by visitors over decades as a tribute or superstition, and the pub's Bloody Marys have their own cult following.
