About The Ship
A family-run free house in a Grade II-listed 1887 corner building, with a relief of ships over the first floor and Bass memorabilia inside.
On the corner of New Cavendish Street and Hanson Street, The Ship has held a licence since 1772, when it traded as the Centurion until 1815, and the building you see today dates from a rebuild of 1887. It is Grade II listed, a four-storey block in red brick and stucco in an ornate Classical style, with pink granite pilasters around the corner entrance and a stucco relief of ships bearing the date in place of the central first-floor window. Inside it leans into its name with a nautical theme and a collection of Bass brewery memorabilia. It is run as an independent family free house and is registered as an Asset of Community Value; the upstairs function room is available to hire, and the programme includes Busy Lady Bingo and a monthly quiz on the last Monday of the month. Dogs are welcome.
On tap
Mostly keg beers, including the Hawkstone range, and a long whisky list; real ale does not appear to be a regular feature.
Food
No kitchen: customers can bring their own food or have a takeaway delivered from the restaurants nearby.
