About The Three Tuns
A Greene King house dating to 1764 in a former coaching mews behind Selfridges, one of the last of the original mews buildings still working as a pub.
The Three Tuns started out as a refuge for the coachmen, servants and stable workers of the grand Portman Estate houses whose mews backed onto it, and it's now one of the last of those original mews buildings left standing in the area. An adjoining building was absorbed into the pub at some point, giving it the split-level layout it still has, and the frontage was extended in 1871 to roughly its current shape. It survived the Blitz, which levelled much of the surrounding streets, and the Portman Estate still holds the freehold today while Greene King runs it as a working pub. A few minutes' walk from Oxford Street and Selfridges, it draws a mix of shoppers, tourists and local office workers into small, traditionally furnished rooms — including a snug — built around red leather banquettes and a fireplace with a pair of well-worn leather armchairs beside it.
